IPL 2020: Patanjali To Bid For IPL Title Sponsorship

With title sponsors VIVO cutting ties with IPL this season, BCCI are currently looking for a lucrative sponsors. Despite interest from many big brands in India and across the world, till now no news have been confirmed.

The tournament is only five weeks away and the board are still looking with VIVO pulling out very late. Recent reports suggest Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali is mulling over entering the bidding process to become the new title sponsors. Patanjali’s spokesperson Tijarawala also confirmed this news to Economic times.

“We are considering the IPL title sponsorship for this year, since we want to give the Patanjali brand a global marketing platform,” Patanjali spokesperson SK Tijarawala told Economic Times.

“This is for Vocal For Local and making one Indian brand as global, this is the right platform. We are considering that perspective. We have to make a final decision, whether we would take it or not,” Tijarawala added.

BCCI have asked all the interest parties to submit their bids before August 14. A final decision is most likely to be arrived by this weekend. Currently, BCCI are earning Rs 440 crore per year from VIVO. The Chinese phone maker made a five year contract back in 2018 which was worth around Rs 2200 cr.

Big Brands Interested In Bidding

Although Patanjali is the latest name to enter the race, there are many big names who are mulling over getting the rights. The pandemic has changed the conditions a lot and BCCI are also ready to offer discounts.

The board is reportedly willing to give up to 50% discount on the current price for the sponsors. Big names like  Jio, Amazon, the TATA group, Adani group, Coca Cola, Dream 11, and Byju’s are all interested in winning the rights for this season.

With VIVO likely to take over title rights against next summer, this might only be a temporary contract for one season.

Indian Premier League season 13 will begin on September 19 in United Arab Emirates. The tournament was forced out of India at this moment, because of Corona Virus crisis. The finals are set to be played on November 10.

All the franchises have already begun preparations and will soon fly to UAE in the coming days. This will be the first time complete season will be played outside India since 2009.
