Series – India vs Australia One day Internationals(2009)

The Background

In an ODI series of seven match, this was the second game. In the first match, India had lost to Australia by just four runs. Going into this match, the Indian team were under immense pressure to win the game.

The Match

Australia won the toss and elected to field first. The Indian openers Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, could not provide a solid start to India. The first dismissal was of Sachin, at the team score of 21.

Sehwag played quickly like he always did, but was out at individual score of 40 runs. Yuvraj Singh was the next man out. The Indian team was then, left at precarious position of 97-3. Enter MS Dhoni at number 5.

Dhoni’s Innings

Dhoni along with Gautam Gambhir built a partnership of 119 runs in quick time. A set Gambhir was dismissed at score of 68 when the team score was 216 in the 34 overs.

Then, MS Dhoni changed gears with Suresh Raina as the duo added 136 runs in less than 15 overs.

He was particularly severe on medium pace bowler Ben Hilfenaus who proved to be the most expensive bowler of the Australian bowling ending up with figures of 10-0-83-0.

Dhoni completed his half century of 55 balls which contained 3 boundaries. Then, the batsman took only 39 more balls to complete next 50 runs. He reached his hundred of just 94 balls that had seven boundaries and two huge hits for sixes.

 

Dismissal of Dhoni

Captain Dhoni was dismissed in the final over at the score of 124 as he was trying to hit a six. He was caught out after playing a grand innings which included a total of 9 fours and 3 sixes. The skipper spent 141 minutes at the crease.

His innings was the glue which India stuck with and hence the team finished with massive score of 354-7.

Australia’s reply -:

In reply to India’s huge target, Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals and could never get, even one solid partnership which could have given them hope. Michael Hussey was the highest scorer for Australia with 53 runs while for India, Ravindra Jadeja picked up 3 wickets for 35 runs.

Result -:

The opposition team was all out at the score of 255 runs due to the consistent pressure applied by the Indians. The Indian team strolled to victory by 99 runs. The seven match series was level at 1-1.

MS Dhoni was adjudged the man of the match for his brilliant innings of 124 of a mere 107 balls.
