World’s best all rounder from England, Ben Stokes was caught in a controversy. The controversial moment arrived during India’s reply to England’s first innings. Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill were opening the Indian innings. For England, veteran seamers James Anderson and Stuart Broad opened the bowling.

England needed an early breakthrough to put pressure on the Indian team. That moment of early wicket almost arrived. During the second over of the Indian innings, Broad was bowling to Gill. The bowler bowled a lovely ball to Gill who was squared up. Duly, he edged it straight to slips where Ben Stokes was standing.

The fielder, Stokes dived forward to take the catch but as he was in the process of completing the catch, the ball died on him. However, he still claimed the catch!

The incident

Believing the word of the fielder, umpire gave the batsman Out. But, since the situation wasn’t crystal clear, the call was given to third umpire. The umpire’s verdict was Out, so the third umpire needed a conclusive evidence to over rule the decision.

The camera panned into the replay of the ball from different angles. It was then clear that the ball had fell onto the ground before the fielder could catch it clearly. By watching it from all angles, the third umpire over ruled the decision and gave Not Out to the batsman.

Stokes was then seen giggling after the decision of the third umpire came out. The other senior Englishmen James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Joe Root started to argue with the on field umpire. However all those arguments turned out to be futile exercise as Gill was called back to bat.
