The Indian team for the tour of Sri Lanka has been announced. A short tour that will finish within 12 days, the Indian team will play 3 ODIs and 3 T20’s in it. Since the main Indian team will be busy in England, the selectors have chosen a side that consists of fringe players and IPL stars.
A number of new players will be seen in the tour that happens next month in July. The side will be led by Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar will be the vice captain of it. While Dhawan is not a part of Indian test team any more, Bhuvaneshwar has been suffering from injuries. This has hampered his career in Test cricket.
The other notable entries in the team are the Pandya brothers, Yuzi Chahal and Manish Pandey. Moreover, it has Prithvi Shaw, Manish Pandey, Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer and T Natarajan continue to miss out due to injuries.
The full team which was selected by BCCI is :
Shikhar Dhawan (C), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (VC), P Shaw, D Padikkal, R Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav, M Pandey, H Pandya, Nitish Rana, Ishan Kishan (WK), S Samson (WK), Y Chahal, R Chahar, K Gowtham, K Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, V Chakravarthy, D Chahar, N Saini, C Sakariya.
A mix of senior and junior players
These players will be involved in both the ODI and T20 series. Also, it is the first time that players like Padikkal, R Gaikwad, Nitish Rana will be part of Indian team. This list also includes Varun Chakarvarthy, K Gowtham and C Sakariya.
Devdutt Padikkal and K Gowtham were brilliant in the first class cricket as well as IPL. The other potential debutants had performed superbly during the IPL. Moreover, R Gaikwad, Nitish Rana and Varun Chakarvarthy had lit up the IPL during last season as well. Also, Chetan Sakariya, the left arm seamer from Gujarat was the standout bowler for his team Rajasthan. This was his first ever IPL.
It will be a great chance for Prithvi Shaw, Manish Pandey and Sanju Samson to solidify their presence in the team. Shaw was out of the team after indifferent performance. While, the latter two have been getting in and out of the team thanks to inconsistency.
The tour begins from 13 July and will end on 25 July
